Running a Vintage Story server means a handful of commands you will use again and again: making yourself admin, giving your friends the right role, closing the server to strangers, installing a mod, and fixing the weather when a storm has lasted three days.

This is that list, checked against Vintage Story 1.22 — the server itself, not just the wiki, which still describes some commands the way they worked several versions ago. Every command is typed in chat or in the server console, starting with a slash.

Becoming admin, and handing out roles

The first admin is made from the server console, which always has full rights:

/op YourName

/op is a shortcut for giving someone the admin role. Roles are how Vintage Story handles permissions: every player has exactly one, and new players get suplayer. To give a role, or see someone's current one:

/player FriendName role sumod
/player FriendName role

It works whether the player is online or not, and needs no restart. There is no /deop: to take admin away, give the player another role, for example /player FriendName role suplayer.

RoleWhat it is for
suvisitor / crvisitorVisitors who can only chat, in survival or creative
suplayerThe default: build, use, claim land, fight, chat
crplayerLike a player, in creative mode, with free movement
sumodModerator: kick, ban, announce, build everywhere
crmodCreative moderator, can also run commands on other players
adminEvery privilege

/list roles shows the roles on your server. A single privilege can be granted on top of a role: /player FriendName privilege grant gamemode.

Need a server to try these on? A HytHost Vintage Story server with any version from 1.18.15 to the latest starts at €2.58/mo.

Whitelist: who can join

With the whitelist on, only players you have added can join. A standard Vintage Story dedicated server has it on by default; on HytHost new servers start with it off, so anyone with the address — and the password, if you set one — can join.

/serverconfig whitelistmode on
/player FriendName whitelist on
/whitelist add FriendName
/whitelist remove FriendName

whitelistmode takes on, off or default (on for a dedicated server). Adding and removing players works instantly, online or offline; /player FriendName whitelist on and /whitelist add FriendName do the same thing.

On a HytHost server, switch the whitelist itself on in the Startup tab rather than with /serverconfig whitelistmode: the server name, password, player limit and whitelist setting are applied from the Startup tab every time the server starts, so a console change to them only lasts until the next restart. Adding players to the list is not affected.

Live, after a restart, or only on a new world

ChangeWhen it applies
Roles, privileges, whitelist entries, kicks and bansImmediately
Time and weatherImmediately
/worldconfig settings such as death punishment, creature hostility, food spoilageAfter a restart
Mods installed or removedAfter a restart
Edits to serverconfig.jsonStop the server, edit, start it again
World type, size, climate, landforms, seedOnly when a new world is created

The world generation settings are fixed once the world exists — the server refuses to change the world size at all. To play with different ones, start a new world; the usual way is to set it up in single player first and then put that world on the server, which our world upload guide walks through.

Running commands on a HytHost server

The Console tab of your GamePanel is the server console. Start every command with a slash, exactly as in chat; the console runs with full rights, so it is where you type your first /op.

  • The Startup tab owns a few settings. Server name, password, player limit and the whitelist switch are applied from the Startup tab at every start, so change them there. The play style and seed are also set there, before the world is created.
  • Mods two ways. List ModDB ids in MODDB_MODS in the Startup tab and reinstall — the server picks the release made for your game version — or use /moddb install and restart.
  • Any version. The game version is chosen at checkout, from 1.18.15 to the newest stable release, and can be changed later in the Startup tab. Moving to a newer version keeps your world; moving to an older one starts a new world and keeps the current one in a folder of its own.
  • Backups and restarts. Automatic backups are included, and scheduled restarts can run /announce and a save on a timer.

Vintage Story is a PC game for Windows, macOS and Linux, and every player needs their own account from vintagestory.at. Vintage Story hosting has every plan and a Custom server up to 16 GB.

Pick your game version at checkout, install ModDB mods from the Startup tab, keep automatic backups — Vintage Story hosting from €2.58/mo.

Frequently asked questions

Type /op YourName in the server console. It gives your player the admin role, which has every privilege. Other roles are handed out with /player Name role rolename, for example sumod for a moderator.

Turn the whitelist on with /serverconfig whitelistmode on, then add players with /player Name whitelist on or /whitelist add Name. On a HytHost server, switch the whitelist on in the Startup tab instead, because that setting is applied at every start.

Use /moddb install with the mod id from the official ModDB, for example /moddb install carryon, then restart the server. /moddb list shows what is installed and /moddb remove takes a mod out again.

Use /time set with a time of day such as sunrise or an hour, and /weather seti with a pattern such as clearsky. For longer days, /time calendarspeedmul is the recommended setting rather than /time speed.

World settings changed with /worldconfig, installed or removed mods, and edits to serverconfig.json need a restart. Roles, whitelist entries, bans, time and weather apply immediately. World type, size, climate and seed only apply to a new world.
