A 7 Days to Die server is run from its console: that is where you make yourself admin, kick the player who keeps breaking the base, teleport a friend out of a collapsed POI and save the world before a restart. And since V3, a few things moved — the blood moon, loot and XP settings no longer live in serverconfig.xml at all.

This guide covers becoming admin, the commands you will actually use, how to reach the console on a dedicated server, and the server settings people change most, for V3 (currently V3.3).

How to make yourself admin

Admins and their rights live in serveradmin.xml, next to the saves. You can edit it by hand, but the reliable way is the console, because it writes the IDs for you.

  1. Join the server with the account you want to make admin.
  2. In the server console, list the players: lp shows who is online, and lpi (listplayerids) shows the IDs the server uses for them.
  3. Add yourself at level 0:
admin add YourName 0

Use the name while the player is online; with the ID from lpi it also works for someone who is offline. admin list shows every admin, and admin remove YourName takes the rights away.

Permission levels

Levels run from 0, the highest, to 1000, the lowest. A player can run any command whose level is equal to or above theirs. Players who are not in the file count as 1000, and commands that are not listed in the file require level 0 — so out of the box, only full admins can run commands. To open one command to everyone:

cp add gettime 1000

cp is commandpermission: cp list shows the overrides and cp remove gettime resets one. The same file also holds a <whitelist> section: as soon as it contains anyone, only those players can join.

No server yet? A HytHost 7 Days to Die server with Stable, Experimental or an older version starts at €7.14/mo.

dm and cm are cheats by design: they give whoever turns them on flight, god mode and every item. Keep them at level 0 on a public server, and turn them off again when you are done building.

Reaching the console on a dedicated server

There are three ways in:

  • The in-game console. Press F1 while connected. An admin can run every command at or above their permission level from there.
  • Telnet. The server has a telnet console (TelnetEnabled, port 8081 by default). Without a TelnetPassword it only listens on the server itself, which is the safe default.
  • The web dashboard. WebDashboardEnabled turns on a browser dashboard with a live map and a command box, protected by API tokens.

On a HytHost server you do not need any of them: the Console tab of your GamePanel is connected to the server's telnet console behind the scenes, so whatever you type there goes straight to the game. Telnet stays closed to the internet and the web dashboard is turned off, so neither can be used to get in from outside.

Server settings people change most (and what moved in V3)

Since V3.0, difficulty, blood moon frequency and size, loot abundance and respawn, XP, day length, airdrops and the zombie behaviour settings are no longer separate lines in serverconfig.xml. They are one sandbox code: set everything up on the game's new-game (Sandbox) screen, copy the code it shows, and put it in the server's SandboxCode. Guides that tell you to edit BloodMoonFrequency or LootAbundance are written for older versions.

What still lives in serverconfig.xml:

KeyWhat it does
ServerName, ServerPasswordName in the server browser, and the join password
ServerMaxPlayerCountPlayer limit; 8 by default, and 8 at most for crossplay
ServerVisibility2 public, 1 friends only, 0 not listed
GameWorldNavezgane or RWG for a random world
WorldGenSeed, WorldGenSizeSeed and size of a random world
GameNameThe name of the save
PlayerKillingMode0 no player killing, 1 allies only, 2 strangers only, 3 everyone
EACEnabled, ServerAllowCrossplayAnti-cheat, and whether PS5 and Xbox Series players can join

For console crossplay the game requires anti-cheat on, at most 8 players and no mods, and the sandbox settings must stay within the ranges the game allows. PC players can join whatever the settings; console players cannot.

Admin commands on a HytHost server

  • Console: type commands in the panel's Console tab, without a slash. Run admin add YourName 0 there the first time you join.
  • serveradmin.xml is in UserData/Saves/ in the file manager; restart after editing it by hand.
  • The Startup tab owns the main settings: server name, password, player limit, world (Navezgane or a random world with its seed and size), save name, anti-cheat, crossplay and the sandbox code. They are written into serverconfig.xml at every start, so change them there. Other keys, such as ServerVisibility and PlayerKillingMode, you edit in the file.
  • Stop saves: the panel's Stop button sends shutdown, which saves the world first.
  • Versions: Stable, Experimental and older versions for the big overhaul mods, chosen at checkout and switchable later. Saves from different versions do not mix, so a switch starts a new world and keeps the old one in a folder of its own.

Frequently asked questions

Join the server, then type admin add YourName 0 in the server console. Level 0 is the highest. You can also add yourself to serveradmin.xml by hand and restart; use lpi in the console to see the IDs the server uses.

Use giveself with the item name, an optional quality from 1 to 6 and a count, for example giveself resourceWood 1 500 for 500 wood. Item names are the game's internal names, such as resourceWood rather than Wood. For experience, use giveselfxp with an amount. The creative menu, opened with cm, lets you take any item directly.

Type dm in the console to toggle debug mode, which gives flight, god mode and the debug menus. cm toggles the creative menu. Both are cheats, so only admins should be able to use them on a public server.

Since V3 the blood moon settings are part of the sandbox code instead of serverconfig.xml. Set the frequency on the game's new-game screen, copy the sandbox code and put it in the server's SandboxCode, then restart. On HytHost the sandbox code goes in the Startup tab.

Yes. Commands typed in the server console work the same with crossplay on. Console players have their own platform IDs, which lpi shows, and you use those IDs with admin add, kick or ban like any other.
