Simple Voice Chat adds proximity voice to Minecraft: players hear each other louder the closer they stand, and can form private groups. It is one of the most popular mods for survival, roleplay and horror servers.

The one part that trips people up is the network: voice needs its own UDP port. This guide covers the install, the port, the config file and the fixes for players who cannot connect.

How Simple Voice Chat works

  • Server and players both need it. The server runs the mod or plugin, and every player who wants voice installs the mod on their client. Players without it can still join and play, just without voice.
  • It runs on many platforms. The mod works on Fabric, NeoForge, Forge and Quilt, the plugin on Paper, Spigot, Purpur and Folia, and they talk to each other. Even on a Paper server, players still need the client mod.
  • Voice uses a separate UDP port, 24454 by default. Only the server needs that port open; players do not open anything.
  • Java Edition only. Bedrock players, including those joining through Geyser, cannot use it. Custom clients such as Lunar and Feather are not supported either.

Install the mod or plugin

  1. Download Simple Voice Chat from Modrinth or CurseForge: the plugin file for Paper or Spigot, or the mod file for your loader and Minecraft version.
  2. Put it in plugins (Paper, Spigot) or mods (Fabric, NeoForge, Forge) and restart the server once. See how to install Minecraft plugins.
  3. The first start creates the config file:
    • plugins/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties on Paper and Spigot;
    • config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties on modded servers.
  4. Tell your players to install the mod for their loader and Minecraft version.

Set up the voice port

The voice port must be open for UDP and must not be the game port.

  • On your own machine: forward UDP 24454 on your router and allow it in the firewall. In Docker, map it as 24454:24454/udp; without /udp only TCP is forwarded and voice fails.
  • On a hosted server: you need a second port assigned to your server, and you put that number in the config.

On HytHost Minecraft hosting you do it yourself:

  1. Open the Network tab in the panel and add an allocation. The panel picks a free port on your server's IP and opens it for both TCP and UDP.
  2. Open voicechat-server.properties and set port to that number, for example:
    port=25571
  3. Restart the server.

Leave voice_host empty: the new port is on the same IP as the game, so players' mods find it on their own. If the Network tab will not let you add a port, open a ticket and we add one for you.

Add the UDP port yourself from the panel: HytHost Minecraft hosting starts at €2.59/mo.

The settings that matter

SettingDefaultWhat it does
port24454The UDP port for voice. Do not set it to the game port: Minecraft also uses UDP on it, and the developer warns it can crash the server
voice_hostemptyThe address players' mods connect to. Only needed behind a proxy or a NAT that changes the port; leave it empty otherwise
max_voice_distance48How far, in blocks, players can hear each other
whisper_distance24Range when whispering
enable_groupstrueLets players create private group chats
force_voice_chatfalseIf true, players without the mod are kicked

Restart the server after editing the file.

For players: first use

  • Press V to open the voice chat menu. The first time, the mod asks for the microphone, the speakers and whether to use push to talk or voice activation.
  • Groups are joined from the menu, or with /voicechat join <group>; /voicechat leave leaves the group.

When players cannot connect to voice

  • Test it: as an operator, run /voicechat test <player> to check whether that player's voice connection works.
  • Wrong port in the config: the number in voicechat-server.properties must match the extra port assigned to your server exactly.
  • TCP instead of UDP: voice needs UDP. Online port checkers test TCP only, so they show nothing useful; use the test command instead.
  • Port clash with Geyser: if the server also runs Geyser for Bedrock players, give voice a different port from Geyser's.
  • Version mismatch: the mod on players' clients must match the server's major version, for example 2.6.x on both.
  • Players hear each other from far away: they are probably in the same group.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

UDP 24454 by default, set as port in voicechat-server.properties. On a hosted server, use an extra port assigned to your server and put that number in the file.

Yes, every player who wants voice needs the mod on their client, even when the server runs the Paper plugin. Players without it can still join and play without voice.

No. The developer states it works on Java Edition only. Bedrock players joining through Geyser can play but cannot use voice.

The setting exists, but the developer strongly advises against it: Minecraft also uses UDP on that port, and sharing it can crash the server. Use a separate port.

Open the Network tab in the panel and add an allocation. The panel picks a free port on your server's IP, open for TCP and UDP. Put that number in voicechat-server.properties and restart.

Add voice to your server

HytHost Minecraft hosting lets you add the UDP port for Simple Voice Chat yourself in the panel, from €2.59/mo.
