What Is cPanel?
On this page
cPanel is the control panel that comes with most web hosting plans: one web page where you manage everything about your website without touching a command line. You upload files, create email addresses on your domain, set up databases, switch on free SSL, take backups and install WordPress in a couple of clicks.
This guide explains what cPanel is, what each part of it does, how it compares with other panels, who it suits — and what you get with cPanel on HytHost web hosting.
cPanel in one paragraph
cPanel is a web-based control panel for one hosting account. Your host runs a server with many accounts on it and manages that server with a sister tool, WHM (WebHost Manager). Each customer gets their own cPanel, where they see only their own websites, email and databases. You open it in a browser, log in with the details from your host, and everything is organised into sections: Files, Databases, Domains, Email, Security, Software and so on.
The host decides which features you see, so two cPanel accounts at different hosts can look slightly different. The core — files, email, databases, domains, SSL — is always there.
Get cPanel with free SSL, daily backups and 1-click WordPress: HytHost web hosting starts at €0.99/mo.

| Section | What it is for |
|---|---|
| File Manager | Upload, edit, move and compress your website's files in the browser, without an FTP program. |
| Email Accounts and webmail | Create addresses like [email protected] and read them in the browser or in any mail app. |
| MySQL Databases and phpMyAdmin | Create the databases and users that WordPress and most web apps need, and browse them with phpMyAdmin. |
| Domains and Zone Editor | Add more domains and subdomains to the same account, each with its own folder, and edit DNS records. |
| SSL/TLS Status (AutoSSL) | Free certificates for your domains, issued and renewed automatically, so your site loads over HTTPS. |
| Backup | Download a full backup of your account, or restore parts of it — files, a database, email settings. |
| Softaculous and WP Toolkit | Install WordPress and hundreds of other apps in a few clicks, and manage WordPress updates and copies from one place. |
| Sitejet Builder | Build a site with a drag-and-drop editor and templates, no code. |
| MultiPHP Manager | Choose the PHP version for each website. |
| Cron Jobs and Git Version Control | Run tasks on a schedule, and deploy a site from a Git repository. |
Logging in
The standard cPanel address is your domain followed by port 2083, for example https://yourdomain.com:2083, and adding /cpanel to your domain usually redirects there. Webmail is on port 2096. Your host's welcome email has the exact address and your username — use that.
cPanel compared with other control panels
cPanel is the most widely used hosting panel, but not the only one. Plesk and DirectAdmin are the best-known commercial alternatives, and there are free, open-source panels for people who run their own server. They all do the same basic jobs — websites, email, databases, SSL — and differ mostly in layout, licence cost and which extras they bundle.
On shared web hosting you rarely choose: the panel comes with the plan. If you have used cPanel before, staying with it means everything is where you expect it, and most hosting tutorials are written for it.
Who cPanel is for
- Website owners who are not system administrators. A blog, a shop, a company site, a portfolio: cPanel lets you run them without knowing Linux.
- Anyone who wants email on their own domain without paying for a separate email service.
- Freelancers and small agencies running several client sites from one account.
- WordPress users, thanks to one-click installs, automatic updates and staging copies.
It is not what you want for a game server, a long-running bot or custom software that needs full control of the machine — that is what a VPS is for. Our VPS vs shared hosting guide helps you choose.

cPanel is commercial software that hosts license per server. On shared web hosting the licence is included in the price of your plan, so you do not pay for it separately. On your own server or VPS you need to buy a licence for that server.
No. WordPress is the software that runs your website; cPanel is the control panel for the hosting account it runs on. You use cPanel to install WordPress, create its database, set up email and SSL, and take backups, then build the site itself in WordPress.
Yes, but you need your own cPanel licence for that server, since cPanel is licensed per server, and you install and maintain it yourself. If cPanel is what you are after, shared web hosting includes it ready to use.
Use the address and username from your host's welcome email. The standard address is your domain followed by port 2083, for example https://yourdomain.com:2083, and adding /cpanel to your domain usually redirects there.
Yes. In Email Accounts you create addresses on your own domain, then read them in webmail in the browser or connect them to any mail app on your phone or computer.
