VPS vs Shared Hosting
On this page
Shared hosting and a VPS both put your website on the internet, but they are different deals. With shared hosting you rent space on a server someone else runs, with a control panel and everything set up. With a VPS you rent a virtual machine of your own and run it yourself.
This guide compares the two on price, performance, control, security and effort, shows which one fits common projects, and explains how to move from one to the other later.
The short answer
- Choose shared hosting for websites: a blog, a business site, a shop, a portfolio, WordPress. It is cheaper, comes with a control panel, email and backups, and the host keeps the server running and secure.
- Choose a VPS when you need things shared hosting does not allow: root access, your own software stack, a game server, a bot, a database or service that runs all the time, or resources reserved for you alone.
If you are not sure, start with shared hosting. Moving a website to a VPS later is a normal step, and nothing about starting small locks you in.
Most websites start on shared hosting: HytHost web hosting with cPanel, free SSL and daily backups is from €0.99/mo.

| Shared hosting | VPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Lowest; from €0.99/mo on HytHost | Higher; from €2.92/mo on HytHost |
| Resources | Shared with the other accounts on the server | RAM, vCPU and storage allocated to your virtual machine |
| Access | A cPanel account; no root | Full root access to your own operating system |
| Who manages the server | The host: operating system, web server, PHP, email, security updates | You: updates, firewall, web server, email, backups |
| Software you can run | Websites: PHP, MySQL, WordPress, Node.js apps | Anything Linux runs: game servers, bots, custom stacks, containers |
| Email and SSL | Included and set up in the panel | You install and configure them |
| Scaling | Move up a plan | Move up a plan, or add resources |
| Skills needed | None beyond using a website panel | Comfort with the Linux command line |
Choose a VPS if…
- You need root access or software that shared hosting does not allow — your own web server, a database you tune yourself, Docker, a language runtime of a particular version.
- You run something that must stay running: a game server, a Discord bot, a background worker, an API.
- You want resources reserved for you rather than shared with other accounts.
- You are comfortable keeping a Linux system updated and secure, or want to learn.
A HytHost VPS runs on KVM with full root access, SSD storage and DDoS protection. It is unmanaged by default, which is the trade: complete control, complete responsibility. If you want cPanel on a VPS, you need your own cPanel licence for it. For game servers, see how to set up a VPS for game servers.
Moving from one to the other
- From another host to HytHost web hosting: one website migration is free with every plan.
- From shared hosting to a VPS: your website is files plus a database, so it moves to a VPS like to any other server: install a web server, PHP and a database on the VPS, copy the files, import the database and point your domain at the new address. It is a manual job, so plan it for a quiet moment.
- Growing within the same kind of hosting: both web hosting and VPS plans can be upgraded from the client area, and you pay only the prorated difference.
For most projects the order is simple: start on shared hosting, and move to a VPS when you hit something it cannot do.

Not automatically. A VPS has resources allocated to it, so it is not affected by other accounts, but its speed depends on its size and on how well you set it up. A small, well-configured website is fast on shared hosting; a VPS pays off when you need the extra control or resources.
Yes. A VPS is unmanaged by default: you install and update the software, configure the firewall, set up email and SSL, and take care of backups. If that sounds like a burden, shared hosting gives you a ready panel instead.
Yes. A website is files plus a database, so it can move to a VPS whenever you need more control. The move is a manual job: set up the web server and database on the VPS, copy the site over and point your domain at it.
For most WordPress sites, shared hosting: one-click installs, automatic updates, free SSL and backups come ready, and no server to maintain. A VPS makes sense for very busy WordPress sites or setups that need custom server software.
No. Shared hosting is built for websites and does not allow long-running processes or open game ports. For a game server, use a VPS, or a managed game server where the panel, backups and updates come ready.
