Skyblock is the survival classic: start on a tiny floating island with almost nothing and build your way to an empire. It is one of the most popular server types ever — and there is more than one way to run it, from a single shared island to a public server where every player gets their own.

This guide covers all three routes — a simple map, the per-player-island setup with BentoBox, and the OneBlock twist — plus the plugins, RAM and hosting to make it stick.

Three ways to run Skyblock

"Skyblock server" can mean three quite different setups. Pick the one that matches your group:

  • A single-island map — one shared island for everyone. The simplest possible setup: download a map, load it, done. Great for a few friends.
  • Per-player islands (BentoBox + BSkyBlock) — the standard for public Skyblock. A Paper plugin gives every player their own island with a command, plus protection, levels and challenges. This is what most real Skyblock servers run.
  • OneBlock — the modern twist where you stand on a single, endlessly regenerating block that evolves through phases. Runs as a BentoBox addon.

Routes two and three need a Paper server (for plugins); route one works on plain Vanilla. If you have not set a server up yet, start with how to make a Minecraft server.

The easiest way: a Skyblock map

For a private island with friends, a map is the fastest route — no plugins at all.

  1. Download a Skyblock map. Get a classic Skyblock world folder from a reputable Minecraft map site.
  2. Load it as your world. Stop the server, replace your world folder with the map (or point level-name in server.properties at it), and start again.
  3. Set the spawn on the island and play. Everyone shares the one island.
A map is simplest, but everyone plays on the same island and there is no island protection. For a public server, or for separate islands per player, use BentoBox below.

The proper way: per-player islands with BentoBox

BentoBox is the modern Skyblock engine — a Paper plugin that runs island-based game modes. With its BSkyBlock add-on, every player types one command and gets their own protected island.

  1. Run a Paper server. Skyblock plugins need Paper (or Spigot).
  2. Install BentoBox and BSkyBlock. Drop both into the plugins folder and restart — the same process as any plugin (see installing plugins).
  3. Let players make islands. Each player runs /island (or /is) to generate their own island; BentoBox handles protection so no one can grief anyone else's.
  4. Tune the settings. BentoBox's config controls island size, the starter chest, world borders and more — set it once for your server's style.

This is what lets a Skyblock server scale to a real community: hundreds of players, each on their own protected island, with a shared spawn and economy in between.

Skip the setup — a HytHost Paper server runs BentoBox Skyblock with per-player islands in minutes.

OneBlock: the modern twist

OneBlock takes Skyblock down to a single block. You stand on one block that regenerates infinitely, and as you mine it the block cycles through phases — dropping different materials, mobs and treasures the further you progress. It has been one of the most popular Skyblock variants for a while.

It runs as a BentoBox add-on (OneBlock), installed exactly like BSkyBlock: Paper server, drop BentoBox plus the OneBlock add-on into plugins, restart, and players get their block with /island. You can even run BSkyBlock and OneBlock side by side as two modes on one server.

Plugins that make Skyblock stick

BentoBox covers islands and protection; a few companions turn it into a full server:

  • An economy plugin — Skyblock thrives on trading and shops; pair one with a permissions setup (see the admin guide for ranks with LuckPerms).
  • Island levels and top-islands — BentoBox add-ons that score islands and rank them, the competitive heart of public Skyblock.
  • Challenges — the BentoBox Challenges add-on gives players goals and rewards, the progression loop that keeps them logging in.

Start with BentoBox + one game mode, get it stable, then layer these on — adding everything at once makes problems hard to trace.

RAM and the easy way to host it

Skyblock is lighter than a modpack but grows with players and islands. Plan 3-4 GB for a friends server and 6 GB or more for a public server with many islands and plugins — the RAM guide has the full picture.

On a HytHost Minecraft server, run Paper, install BentoBox and your game mode from the panel's plugin tools (or drop the JARs in plugins), and you have a per-player-island Skyblock server online in minutes — with a free subdomain to share, one-click backups before you tweak configs, Voxility DDoS protection and a target of 99.9% uptime.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Skyblock is a survival game mode where you start on a tiny floating island with minimal resources and expand from nothing. A Skyblock server runs that mode for multiple players — either as one shared island (a map) or, more commonly, as per-player islands via a plugin like BentoBox.

Run a Paper server and install BentoBox with its BSkyBlock add-on. Each player then types /island (or /is) to generate their own protected island. BentoBox handles the protection so players cannot grief each other, which is exactly why it is the standard for public Skyblock servers.

Classic Skyblock gives you a small island of blocks to build from. OneBlock gives you a single, infinitely regenerating block that cycles through phases as you mine it, dropping progressively better materials and mobs. OneBlock runs as a BentoBox add-on, and you can host both modes on the same server.

Either. A downloaded Skyblock map is the simplest option for a shared, single-island server on plain Vanilla. For per-player islands, protection and a public server, you need the BentoBox plugin on Paper — that is the setup nearly every real Skyblock community uses.

Around 3-4 GB for a small friends server, and 6 GB or more for a public server with many islands and companion plugins. Skyblock is lighter than a modpack, but per-player islands and economy plugins add up as your community grows — size up if it starts to lag.

Yes. Run a Paper server and install BentoBox plus your chosen game mode (BSkyBlock or OneBlock) from the panel's plugin tools or by uploading the JARs. The setup is the same as any plugin server, and the port and uptime are handled for you.
